RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia Union University track & field teams opened the indoor season in impressive fashion, delivering two school records and multiple strong performances across the board.
"Good turnout for the season kickoff! We broke two more school records and had several strong performances across the board," said VUU Head Track & Field Coach Franck Charles. "This first meet showed us exactly where we are and what we need to focus on moving forward."
Highlighting the meet was
Zachary Jones, who broke his own indoor school record in the
shot put, posting an opening throw of
16.93 meters to finish
third out of 27 competitors.
Rodgers Korir also etched his name in the record books, setting a new
school record in the mile with a
career-best time of 4:21.36, surpassing the previous mark held by
Franklin Kipchirchir.
The Panthers showed depth across multiple events, including a
third-place finish by the
men's 4x400-meter relay team.
Additional standout performances included:
- Jaleal Hamlett, who placed fourth overall in the triple jump
- Darryl Hawkins, who finished fifth in the 800 meters and opened the meet with a strong 4:28 performance in the mile
- Trevion Hooker, who advanced to the finals in the shot put
- Jeremiah Brown, who qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash
Virginia Union will look to build on this strong start as the team continues its indoor season.
