Men's Basketball Defeats Virgin Islands 60-56

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands — December 11, 2025 — Virginia Union University secured a hard-fought 60–56 victory over the University of the Virgin Islands on Thursday, grinding out a defensive win to open play in the YES UVI HBCU Basketball Classic.

The Panthers jumped out to a 32–25 halftime lead by controlling the glass, limiting UVI's early rhythm, and generating high-percentage looks inside. The Buccaneers closed the gap in the second half, but VUU responded with timely scoring and disciplined execution down the stretch to secure the four-point victory.

Joshua Caine led Virginia Union with a double-double, recording 15 points and 10 rebounds while anchoring the Panthers on both ends of the court. Noah Richardson-Keys added 11 points, including key baskets that halted UVI's late momentum. Travis Vaughn contributed 8 points and steady two-way play to help guide VUU through a physical, low-possession contest.

Virginia Union outrebounded the Buccaneers 34–31 and limited UVI's second-chance opportunities, preserving control of the game's tempo and protecting the lead in the closing minutes.

With the victory, VUU improves to 8–1 on the season.

"We knew coming in this was going to be tough game coming off the plane ride and playing the host team, the University of the Virgin Islands," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  "I thought we struggled on both ends today, but Joshua Caine gave us a huge spark coming off the bench scoring and rebounding.  We have to play much better tomorrow to advance to the championship game on Saturday."

The Panthers continue competition in the U.S. Virgin Islands against the winner of the Fort Lauderdale/Wilberforce game on Friday.
