Millersville, Pa. — Virginia Union University dropped its opening game of the Millersville Classic on Friday night, falling 82–66 to Millersville University inside Pucillo Gymnasium.
Millersville shot a blistering
61.7 percent from the field and
50 percent from three-point range, using a fast start and consistent offensive execution to stay in control most of the evening. The Panthers shot an efficient 50 percent from the floor but were unable to match the Marauders' scoring pace.
VUU trailed 43–28 at halftime but battled throughout the second half, twice trimming the margin to single digits. Despite the push, Millersville responded with timely three-pointers and inside scoring to maintain separation.
Tahj Harding led the Panthers with
19 points, while
Malachi Dark added a perfect
6-for-6 shooting performance for 12 points.
Bobby Gardner contributed 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Millersville was paced by Day Waters' 22 points, while Saraj Ali added 18.
Following the game, VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach
Jay Butler emphasized the need for stronger defensive execution:
"I thought we got off to a slow start, and Millersville shot the ball extremely well throughout the entire game," Butler said.
"In the second half we had opportunities to cut into the lead, but when we needed key stops, we couldn't get them. We have to defend at a high level to win the second game tomorrow."
Virginia Union returns to action on Saturday for Game Two of the Millersville Classic.
