This past weekend, the Virginia Union University (VUU) men's track & field team delivered an outstanding performance at the HBCU Showcase, held at the renowned Armory Track in New York City. The event, hosted by KPMG, marked the team's fourth indoor meet of the season, and VUU athletes rose to the occasion against powerhouse programs such as Florida A&M, Howard, Norfolk State, and others.
Standout Performances
- Jaleal Hamlett made a triumphant return to competition after nearly two years, achieving a National Qualifier mark in the triple jump with a leap of 14.73 meters, ranking him 18th nationally in Division II. Hamlett, currently ranked 1st in the CIAA Conference, also secured 4th place overall at the HBCU Showcase, a remarkable accomplishment.
- Franklin Kipchirchir continued to make history, finishing 2nd overall in the 3,000-meter race and breaking the school record with an impressive time of 8:34.56. His performance further solidified his reputation as one of the program's standout distance runners.
- Zachary Jones added to the team's success with a strong showing in the shot put. His throw of 15.72 meters earned him 2nd place overall at the meet and secured his position as 2nd in the CIAA Conference rankings.
Coach's Reflections
Head Coach Franck Charles expressed pride in the team's performance, stating:
"Our team performed well, competing against powerhouse HBCU programs such as Florida A&M, Howard, Norfolk State, UMES, Hampton, Morgan State, Coppin State, and others. Many of our athletes placed in the top 5 and top 10 in their events, showcasing their talent and determination against top-level competition."
Coach Charles also highlighted the significance of Hamlett's return and Kipchirchir's and Jones's achievements:
"Special congratulations to Jaleal Hamlett for hitting the Division II national qualifier mark — a remarkable accomplishment after not competing for nearly two years. He's committed to working hard to punch his ticket to nationals. Also, congratulations to Franklin Kipchirchir for setting another school record and to Zachary Jones for his strong performance in the shot put. We're proud of the team's progress and are excited to build on this momentum moving forward."
