The Virginia Union University football team was named Team of the Year at the 2024 RVA Sports Awards, held on Saturday, February 3, at the Altria Theater in Richmond, Va.

The Panthers beat out Randolph-Macon University Softball and the Richmond Flying Squirrels to win the award.

The Panthers finished the season 10-2 and made the Division II playoffs. VUU beat rival Virginia State enroute to the playoff appearance and won the CIAA title in 2023 with a win over Fayetteville State.

It was the Panthers' first CIAA Championship in 22 years.  The 10 wins were the most for a VUU football team since the 1990 team won 10 games.

"I love team awards, and this is the ultimate team award, being named the RVA Team of the Year," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr. Alvin Parker.  "I am extremely proud of our team's season which has led to this award. We have a special group of young men who worked very hard to be considered for such a prestigious award . I want to thank the Richmond Region Tourism group and the RVA Sports Awards for this huge honor."
