Panthers Set Personal Records at Liberty Open

The Virginia Union University men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Lynchburg, Va., to compete in the Liberty University Open, held on Saturday, February 3.

This week's top standout performances at the Liberty University Open Meet will go to both our men and women's 4x400 meter relay team. The men's 4x400 meter team took first place with a team record time of 3:20.65, missing the school record by a little over four tenths of a second(.46). The team is now tied for the 3rd place in the CIAA conference.

The women's  4x400 meter relay team also set a team record with a time of 4:01.57, missing the school record by 1.58 seconds and securing fourth place at the Liberty University Open Meet. Congratulations to both relay teams on their outstanding performances!

Top performances also included Jalen Hinton, Alpha Balde, Mychael Tucker,  Areginae White, Toni MiddleBrooks and Nia Randell.

Hinton competed in the 60-meter hurdles with a final time of 8.18, placing sixth overall out of 24 athletes. Hinton also placed fifth overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.84, both marks are D-II provisional qualifying mark. Hinton is also a part of the 4x400 meter relay team that placed first overall.

Alpha Balde excelled in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.89, this places him fourth overall in the CIAA conference standings.

Personal best achievements include:
  • Aiden Laws ran a personal best time of 22.33 in the 200-meter dash and is a part of the men's 4x4 relay team
  • Mychael Tucker ran a personal best time of time of 50.86 in the 400-meter dash and is a part of the men's 4x4 relay team

All three athletes are freshmen and were part of the 4x4 team.
  • Areginae White had a personal best in the long jump, with a mark of 17.5 feet, ranking her fifth overall in the CIAA
  • Toni MiddleBrooks ran a personal best of 59.90 in the 400-meters.
  •  Nia Randell ran a personal best of 1:00.07 in the 400-meters

"The Liberty University Open Meet was undoubtedly our best meet as a team," said VUU Head Track & Field Coach Charles Franck. "It's a fantastic way to conclude our regular indoor season. I am exceptionally proud of the current positioning of the team, We're eagerly looking forward to next week's CIAA challenge, I believe we will perform even better next weekend at JDL Fast Track."

The men's and women's track & field teams will now compete in the CIAA Championship, to be held on February 11 and 12 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
