Virginia Union University's
Christian Reid connected with
Said Sidibe for a 41-yard touchdown pass while
William Davis returned an interception 50 yards for a pick-six to lift VUU to a 26-13 win over Shaw University on Saturday, September 9, in Durham, N.C.
The game was delayed 2½ hours due to lightning in the Durham area, but VUU ignored the rain to raise its record to 2-0 on the season.
Davis became the first Panther to have two or more interceptions in a single game since Andre LeBlanc had two picks against Saint Augustine's University in 2007.
"I thought (the weather delay) was longer than 2½ hours," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr.
Alvin Parker. "It was so long that we just started to focus on whether or not they were going to cancel the game. I just wanted to make sure we kept the guys up for the game. There's a lot of things in the wellness of the student-athletes that you have to focus on, and you have to keep on schedule. The guys hadn't eaten since breakfast, then you have an almost three-hour delay, but the guys fought through it, and it showed that they had the kind of stamina to be able to go like that."
Reid finished the game with 232 passing yards while Sidibe had 91 receiving yards.
VUU kicker
Brady Myers ran his streak of extra points to 35 straight, dating back to last season.
Virginia Union will now travel to Salisbury, N.C., to face Livingstone College at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16.
