Virginia Union University's
Robert Osborne led all scorers with 33 points and nine rebounds as VUU downed Bowie State University 76-65 on national television on Saturday, February 11, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
The win enabled Virginia Union to capture the Northern Division championship of the CIAA and marked the second straight year where the Panthers have won 20 or more games.
VUU's
Raemaad Wright added 13 points and had four blocks in the win.
"I challenged the guys at halftime to step up and defend," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach
Jay Butler. "Defense is the key to our success. I thought we didn't defend well at Lincoln (PA) and we came out flat. I thought the guys were kind of down early on because of the result of the Lincoln game. I told them that we had to move on and that we're one game from winning the Northern Division, and I thought that our seniors stepped up. Robbie Osborne,
Raemaad Wright and
Keleaf Tate stepped up and made plays when we needed them to."
VUU is now 20-6 overall and 10-4 in the CIAA. The Panthers now travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face Shaw University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15.
