Box Score 3 Virginia Union University's volleyball team went 3-0 at the first CIAA Round-Up, downing Winston-Salem State University 17-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-10, 15-11 and Saint Augustine's 25-17, 25-10, 25-18 on Saturday, September 24 and then defeating Johnson C. Smith University 25-21, 26-24, 25-16 on Sunday, September 25.
This marked the first time a VUU volleyball team went 3-0 at the CIAA Round-Up since 2004.
"I'm really proud of our lady Panthers this weekend and how they battled every point," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach
Joe Sullivan. "We saw a new level of grittiness and a refusal to let up!"
In the Winston-Salem State match, VUU's
Amilex Lopez-Ayala had 33 kills while teammate
Aireanna Johnson added 29 kills.
Lopez-Ayala and Johnson also led the offense against Saint Augustine's. Lopez-Ayala had 23 kills while Johnson added 19. VUU's
Essence Poteat also added six service aces.
Against Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union's
Jade Lane led the Panthers with 12 kills while teammate
Maysun Creery had 12 defensive digs.
Virginia Union now travels to St. Mary's City, Md., to face St. Mary's College of Maryland at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27.
