The Virginia Union University golf team competed in the inaugural SAS Championship HBCU Invitational Golf Tournament on October 15th & 16th, 2022. The SAS Championship HBCU Invitational was contested at Prestonwood Country Club in Raleigh, North Carolina. Each October Prestonwood has the privilege of hosting the SAS Championship, an official PGA TOUR Champions Tour event.


The SAS Championship HBCU Invitational was contested on the Fairway Golf Course a Par 70, 6284 yards layout that features Bermuda Greens and Bent Grass Fairways. A tree-lined course that presented a significant challenge for all the collegiate golfers. There was a total of fourteen team competing in the SAS Championship HBCU Invitational. Four Men's D1 Team, four DI Women's Teams and six D2 Men's Teams.

VUU Team scoring was led by Senior Travon Willis who finished 4th with a score of 210 (71/71/68), followed by Hayden Garcia, 1st Year Grad Student, tied for 6 with a score of 214 (77/70/67), Ahmad Reedus, 1st Year Grad Student, tied for 11th with a score of 224 (80/73/71), followed by  Alkin Barkley, 1st Year Grad Student, tied for 13th with a score of 225 (77/72/76), and Senior Zaccheus Spann tied for 19th with a score of 230 (76/79/75).  

 "This was another first and another tremendous experience for the VUU Golf Team," said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble.  "With the help of Assistant Coach Sean Bowers, the team responded, and we captured second place. We are immensely proud of the way the guys persevered to the end. I continue to be immensely proud of the accomplishments of our VUU Golf Team on and off the golf course".
