Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Panthers Corral Broncos in Home Opener

Virginia Union University's Robert Osborne came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points as the Panthers defeated Fayetteville State University 62-48 in the men's basketball home opener on Saturday, November 27, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

Osborne, a junior transfer from Hampton, was the only VUU player to reach double-figures in a game where Virginia Union dominated with the inside game.

"It was good to play our first home game after being on the road the first couple of weeks of the new season," VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler said.

Virginia Union scored 42 points in the paint while holding Fayetteville State to just 12 inside points.

VUU's Raemaad Wright had nine rebounds to go with nine points in the win while teammate Darius Hines also scored nine points.

"A total team effort but I thought Robbie Osborne gave us some scoring coming off the bench to help us secure the win," Butler said.

Virginia Union forced the Broncos into 20 turnovers and scored 17 points off the turnovers.

"I thought we were very good defensively to start the game but offensively we struggled in the first half to execute our offense.  In the second half we continued to play well defensively and our offense picked up some to help give us a good lead late in the game," Butler said.

The win raised VUU's record to 4-1 on the season while Fayetteville State fell to 3-4 on the year.

The Panthers will now travel to Millersville, Pa., to face Millersville University at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 29.
