Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Leach Seals Win with Trey at 1.1 Seconds

PHOTO GALLERY | Virginia Union University's Terrell Leach hit a three-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to play to lift the Panthers to a 99-97 win over Shaw University on Saturday, January 4, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

Leach scored 20 points as the Panthers won their seventh straight game.

VUU was led in scoring by Jordan Peebles' 24 points while Keshon Tabb had a double-double with 11 points and 10 steals.

Tabb's 10 steals were one short of the VUU school-record of 11 steals in a single game, set by Luqman Jaaber against Saint Paul's College in 2004.

"We knew coming in that this was going to be a tough game after being off for 12 days for the Christmas break," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  "I'm glad we were able to fight back after being down by 16 points late to pull out a win in our last home game before we hit the road for nine games.  We had quite a few players score with the basketball, but when we decided to lock in defensively we got stops when we needed them to get the win.  Terrell Leach was fantastic the last few minutes of the game. He hit big shot after big shot to give us the lead for good. The last 3-point shot was clutch.  Keshon Tabb, Charles Tart III, and Jordan Peebles applied full court pressure to make Shaw turn the ball over to get us back into the game. Keshon had one of his best defensive games of the year with 10 steals."

Five VUU players scored in double-figures, with Darian Peterson scoring 13 points, Tabb scoring 11 and Tart scoring 10 to go with Peebles and Leach's scoring.

Peebles also led the Panthers on the boards with eight rebounds.

The win raised VUU's record to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the CIAA.  Shaw fell to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in CIAA play.

Virginia Union now travels to Raleigh, N.C., to face Saint Augustine's University at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 6.
