Virginia Union University's Terrell Leach scored a career-high 38 points, but Johnson C. Smith University defeated VUU in overtime 96-89 on Saturday, January 25, in Charlotte, N.C.

Leach's 38 points were the most scored by a Virginia Union player since Damion Harris scored 39 points against Elizabeth City State University on February 23, 2012.

"We continue to make crucial mistakes late in the game that's keeping us from winning these road games," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  "Tonight it was turnovers, missed free throws, key rebounds, and defensive stops when we needed them.  I thought Terrell Leach had a phenomenal game scoring.  Jordan Peebles gave us a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  I feel really good about our freshmen, Charles Tart III and Kaylen Vines. They continue to play well and are gaining a lot of confidence as the season goes on."

The loss dropped VUU to 11-10 overall and 4-4 in the CIAA.  Johnson C. Smith is now 11-5 overall and 4-3 in CIAA play.

Virginia Union now travels to Bowie, Md., to face Bowie State University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 30.  The game can be viewed on ESPN3.
