Virginia Union University's Raemaad Wright recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but Claflin University defeated VUU 85-84 in overtime on Thursday, January 9, in Orangeburg, S.C.
 
Virginia Union's Terrell Leach led the Panthers with 19 points while teammate Jordan Peebles added 16 points;
 
"This is our second consecutive loss on the road by one point," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  "We had our opportunities to win the game but we just didn't make the play needed to get the win.  We have seven more road games in a row, so we have to keep fighting and correct the little mistakes that's keeping us from pulling these close games out. I thought our "Big 3" of Terrell Leach, Jordan Peebles, and Raemaad Wright played well.  We are also starting to get some good contributions from our bench with Tyriek Railey, Jordan Pointer, and Kaylen Vines giving us a spark."
 
The non-conference loss dropped Virginia Union to 9-6 overall while Claflin is now 8-7.
 
Virginia Union now returns to CIAA conference action when it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face Winston-Salem State University at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 11.
