Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Wins 2 of 3 at CIAA Round-Up

Virginia Union University's Jamaica Adams had 49 digs in three matches while teammate Akira Baker garnered 45 digs as VUU won two of three matches at the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up held on October 5-6 at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va.

Adams had 14 defensive digs in the Lady Panthers' 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 win over Saint Augustine's University on Saturday, October 5.  Baker had eight digs while teammate Essence Poteat had nine kills.  Virginia Union's Kamryn Young had four blocks and VUU's A'rmaria Wright led the team with 20 assists.

In the second match on Saturday, Baker led the way with 22 defensive digs while Adams collected 21 digs as VUU came from a 2-0 game deficit to defeat Johnson C. Smith University 25-27. 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-3.  Poteat again led the Lady Panthers with 16 kills while A'rmaria Wright had six service aces.  Wright also had 36 assists in the win.

Although Baker had 15 digs and Adams had 14 digs, Shaw University defeated VUU 24-26, 25-13, 25-10, 25-7 on Sunday, October 6.  Poteat again had nine kills while Wright had 24 assists.

"These were fierce matches where the team showcased their blocking abilities and grit," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach Renesha Johnson.  "Each player played an intricate role in executing both wins and displayed their ability to dig deep to overcome their opponent. Unfortunately, we did not show the same composure on Sunday with a loss against Shaw in four sets. The Lady Panthers are not easily discouraged as we noted our mistakes and look forward to facing them again."

Virginia Union will stage its home opener when the Lady Panthers meet Elizabeth City State University at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
