Virginia Union University overcame a four-point deficit in the 50 seconds of regulation, then out-scored Fayetteville State University 9-2 in overtime to take an 80-73 win over the Broncos on Saturday, January 12, in Fayetteville, N.C.
Fayetteville State had led by as much as 17 points with 7:30 (60-43) left to play in the second half when VUU's offense suddenly and dramatically woke up. The Panthers outscored Fayetteville State 28-11 over the last seven minutes, tying the game at 71-71 with 24 seconds left in regulation on a layup by
Jordan White.
Virginia Union's
William Jenkins led the Panthers in scoring with 23 points while White led the team on the boards with 13 rebounds. Both had double-doubles, with Jenkins grabbing 10 rebounds and White scoring 17 points.
"I'm very proud of the way we fought in the second half, especially in the last four minutes of the game and overtime," said VUU Head Coach
Jay Butler. "We had several players step up and make clutch plays at the end of the game. Will Jenkins and
Jordan White were very good in the second half with rebounding, scoring and defending the point.
"I thought the pressure from our press was key for us to get the win," Butler said. VUU forced Fayetteville State into making 21 turnovers while the Panthers committed just 13.
The win evened VUU's record at 7-7 overall and raised it to 4-1 in the CIAA. Fayetteville State fell to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in CIAA play.
