Virginia Union University's Will Jenkins got his fifth double-double of the season when he scored 16 points and 11 rebounds in VUU's 93-79 win over Shaw University on Thursday, January 10, in Raleigh, N.C.
Â
VUU newcomer
Terrell Leach, who joined the Panthers at the beginning of January, hit 10 of 17 shots including five three-pointers as he scored 31 points. Leach became the first VUU player to scored 30 or more points in a single game since
Ray Anderson scored 32 points against Winston-Salem State University on December 3, 2016.
Â
VUU's
Jordan White scored 18 points in the win.
Â
"This was a great road win for us," said VUU Head Coach
Jay Butler. "Shaw is one of the toughest places to play in the country. I thought it was a total team effort on the defensive end, trying to slow down the nation's leading scorer (Shaw's Amir Hinton). We held him to 30 percent shooting (3-of-10).
Â
"I was really happy for
Terrell Leach," Butler continued. "He scored the ball extremely well tonight and gave us some much-needed outside shooting from the three-point line. Will Jenkins did a good job rebounding the ball and made key plays down the stretch to put the game away.Â
Jordan White continues to play well and is really starting to come on for us as a consistent scorer."
Â
The win raised VUU's record to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in CIAA play. Shaw dropped to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the CIAA.
Â
Virginia Union now travels to Fayetteville, N.C., to face Fayetteville State University at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12.
