Virginia Union University's A'rmaria Wright had 12 assists while Ambryanna Moore had six kills, but Winston-Salem State University defeated the Lady Panthers 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 on the first day of the 2017 CIAA Volleyball Championship, held on Friday, November 17, at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va.

Virginia Union had entered the tournament as the #3 team in the Northern Division of the CIAA while WSSU was the #2 team in the Southern Division.

VUU's Akira Baker had nine defensive digs in the match.

Moore also had two service aces in the match.

The loss gives VUU a final 2017 record of 15-11 while Winston-Salem State is now 20-7.
