PETERSBURG, VA- The Fayetteville State University volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over Virginia Union University on Friday evening. The Lady Broncos advance to the CIAA Semifinal with the win and will take on Chowan University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Fayetteville State University entered the contest as the No. 2 seed in the CIAA Southern Division with Virginia Union University representing the Northern Division as the No. 3 seed in the Northern Division.
The Lady Panthers captured a 25-22 win in the opening set. Fayetteville State responded with a 25-14 win in set two and 25-20 victory in set three to pull away 2-1. The Lady Broncos captured the match win with a 25-17 win in set three.
Bojo Jada led the effort for Fayetteville State with 13 kills. Jayde Jacobs added 12 kills in the victory while Nakia McKinnie notched 20 assists. Arlicia Ortiz recorded 15 digs over the course of the contest.
Ambryanna Moore led the effort for Virginia Union with 13 kills.
A'rmaria Wright notched 33 assists with
Jamaica Adams recording 14 digs in the setback.
The opening set featured a fierce battle for momentum. With the score tied 13-13, a Fayetteville State service error led to a 7-2 run for Virginia Union, leaving the Lady Broncos trailing 20-15. Virginia Union maintained the lead for the remainder of the set and secured the 25-22 win with a kill by
A'rmaria Wright.
In set two, the Lady Broncos grabbed the momentum early and never looked back. Fayetteville State pulled away 17-10 late in the set before capturing the 25-14 win.
Fayetteville State raced to a 15-8 lead by the midway point of set three. The Lady Panthers were unable to regroup and suffered the 25-20 setback. Virginia Union quickly fell behind 16-9 in the fourth set and was unable to recover from the early deficit. The Lady Broncos kept a firm grip on the momentum and secured the 25-17 set win after a Lady Panther error.
Fayetteville State advances to CIAA Semifinal action with an 18-7 overall record. Virginia Union's season comes to an end with a 14-11 mark.
