Wesley Carter, 1907-2012

Wesley T. Carter, Virginia Union University's oldest lving alumnus and a fan of VUU sports for over 86 years, passed away on Monday, June 25, at the age 104.

He would have been 105 on August 22.

He was the nation's oldest living Phi Beta Sigma brother and graduated from VUU in 1929.

During his time at VUU, he attended every road and home football and basketball game, including VUU's 2012 home basketball finale against Bowie State on February 20 of this year.

As a collegiate, Carter played basketball with the Richmond Phi Beta Sigma team alongside greats such as “Puff” Taylor and “Stretch” Gardner. They beat all the other fraternities in the area and often played their games on the second floor of Johnson's Funeral Home. 

After serving his community for many years as a career educator, his Alma Mater honored Carter with a Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2008. He was Virginia Union University's oldest living alum (Class of '29). Carter was also recognized that year by the United Negro College Fund as the “Outstanding Alumnus of Year” for 2007.

Services will be held at Coburn Hall on the VUU campus at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30.  Scotts Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
