Valeria Cantu (above) collected over 50 digs in four games as the Lady Panthers finished 2-2 at the first CIAA Volleyball Round-Up, held September 11 and 12 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
VUU fell in straight sets 3-0 to Livingstone College and then were downed by Winston-Salem State University 26-24, 25-13, 25-13 on the first day of the tournament despite Cantu getting 20 digs against WSSU.
Aisha Berkley led Virginia Union with 11 kills while
Jessica Thompson and
Brittanee Adams garnered 11 assists apiece against Winston-Salem State.
The Lady Panthers bounced back on the second day of the round-up, downing Johnson C. Smith University in dramatic fashion 23-25, 25-20, 13-25, 26-24, 15-12.
Cantu had 15 digs while Berkley had 14 kills and Adams had 30 assists.
In the final match of the weekend, VUU defeated Shaw University 26-24, 25-18, 28-26 with Cantu leading the Lady Panthers with 11 digs and Berkley with 10 kills. Adams added 18 assists in the match.
The wins raised VUU's record to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union now travels to Petersburg, Va., to face Virginia State University on Thursday, September 16.
