Robert Johnson is a Richmond, Va., native that started his basketball career at George Wythe High School where he was a starting point guard for a teaam that was 27-1 in his senior year. Johnson guided his team to the Virginia High School State Championship Game in his junior year, but fell short to Bayside. Â In his senior year, Johnson was named District Player of the Year, First-Team All-Region, First-Team All-Metro, Honorable Mention All-State and was a McDonald's All-American nominee while capture the Central Region Championship with an undefeated record of 27-0 and ranked #1 in the state of Virginia. Â Johnson continued his basketball career at Christopher Newport before transferring to Virginia Union for his final three years. Â While at VUU, Johnson was a three-year starter and was able to be a part of a team which was ranked #1 in the country, CIAA Champions in 1998, South Atlantic Region Champs and a Final Four team. Â Johnson led the CIAA in assist-to-turnover ratio and was named the team Defensive Player of the Year during his stint at VUU. Â Johnson was able to further his career by playing with the Richmond Generals of the American Basketball Association.
After finishing his playing career, Johnson began his coaching career with the Richmond Metro AAU program and during that time he was able to coach Reggie Williams, who plays for the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA. Â Johnson continued to coach AAU for the next 15 years, with his last stint being with the Richmond Squires in 2014-15. Â While coaching AAU basketball, Johnson has coached current college players Robert Johnson, Jr. (Indiana), Devin Robinson (Florida), Kaleb Johnson (Georgetown), ShawnDre Jones (Richmond), Austin Williams (Drexel) and Nick Coppola (Louisiana-Monroe) just to name a few.
Johnson is a very passionate and caring coach to his players. Â While coaching AAU basketball in the summer, Johnson continued to coach high school basketball in the Richmond Metro area, where he was responsible for player development and scouting stints with George Wythe High School in 2004-05, as assistant varsity coach at L.C. Byrd High School from 2009-12. Â The Skyhawks were the Central Region Champions and Virginia State Runners-Up in 2010-11, the first time ever in school history. Â
Johnson was able to take a brief break from coaching to focus on assisting with his children's athletic futures, only to get back into coaching in 2014-15 as Assistant Coach at Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. Â Johnson is active in the Richmond Metro community as a mental health professional for the New YCAPP Inc.
Robert earned his Bachelors' in Business Administration from Saint Paul's College after continuing his studies.
Robert is married to the former Tamara Coleman, a VCU graduate. Â Together they have four children, Anthony, Yahkee (Nassau Community College), Robert (Indiana University), and Malik (Blueridge High School).
