RICHMOND, Va. —Virginia Union University (VUU) proudly announced the appointment of A.J. English as the new Head Coach of the Panthers Men’s Basketball program. A distinguished alumnus and former professional basketball player, English returns to his alma mater to lead the next chapter of VUU Basketball.

English brings a dynamic combination of collegiate excellence, professional experience, and a deep connection to the Virginia Union community. As a former standout student-athlete, he understands the legacy, pride, and expectations that define Panther basketball. His return marks a powerful homecoming rooted in purpose, leadership, and a commitment to student-athlete success.

During his time at Virginia Union University from 1986–1990, English established himself as one of the most accomplished players in program history. He scored 2,396 career points, including a single-season school record of 1,001 points during the 1989–90 season. In 1990, he was named CIAA Player of the Year and NCAA Division II National Player of the Year under legendary Head Coach Dave Robbins. English earned All-CIAA honors three times (1988, 1989, and 1990) and was named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team in both 1989 and 1990.

Following his collegiate career, English was selected by the Washington Bullets in the second round (37th overall) of the 1990 NBA Draft. He played two seasons with the organization, averaging 9.9 points per game, and later signed with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1993 before continuing his professional career overseas.

“We are excited to welcome A.J. English back to Virginia Union University,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics & Community Wellness Joe Taylor. “He embodies the Panther spirit and brings the experience, vision, and leadership needed to move our program forward. His commitment to excellence and student-athlete development aligns perfectly with our goals for VUU Athletics.”

As head coach, English will focus on building a competitive program that reflects the university’s tradition of excellence while preparing student-athletes for success beyond basketball.

“I am honored to return to Virginia Union University and lead this program,” said English. “VUU played a significant role in shaping who I am today, and I am committed to pouring back into our student-athletes and building a championship culture that reflects the pride of this institution.”

The official announcement will take place during a press conference on Friday, April 17 at 12:00 p.m. in the Living & Learning Center on the campus of Virginia Union University.

Virginia Union University looks forward to the future of Panther Basketball under English’s leadership and the continued growth of its student-athletes as leaders on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
