Women's Cross-Country Place 11th at Spider Alumni Open

The Virginia Union University women's cross-country team opened its 2026 season Saturday by competing in the Spider Alumni Open, hosted by the University of Richmond at Pole Green Park.

The Lady Panthers finished 11th in a field of 16 teams, finishing ahead of NCAA Division I Norfolk State University and CIAA rival Virginia State University.

VUU was paced by Natalie Young, who finished 70th overall on the four-kilometer course with a time of 16:26.5.

"Our ladies' team opened the season with a solid first meet all around," said VUU Head Cross-Country Coach Franck Charles. "We're hoping everyone stays motivated, healthy, and focused throughout the season. If we can do that, I truly believe these ladies are going to surprise a lot of teams in our conference!

"Great job to our ladies' team! Keep working, keep believing, and keep pushing!"

The Spider Alumni Open marked the first competition of the 2026 season for the Lady Panthers, who will look to build on Saturday's performance as the season continues.

Virginia Union returns to action on Friday, September 11, when the Lady Panthers travel to Charlotte, N.C., to compete in the Queen City Invite, hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.
