VUU Women Race to Historic Finish at CIAA XC Championship

RICHMOND, VA – The Virginia Union University women's cross-country team closed out a remarkable season with a 3rd-place finish at the 2025 CIAA Cross Country Championships — marking the program's first top-three result in nearly a decade and only the second in school history.

"What a fantastic way to conclude our cross-country season for the ladies' team!" said VUU Head Cross Country Coach Franck Charles. "The journey wasn't easy. This season presented numerous challenges, and there were moments when some of the athletes expressed doubt, saying, 'Coach, I don't think we can do it.' But I reassured them, 'Yes, we can — we just have to fight.' And that's exactly what they did. Regardless of the preseason rankings, I always believed in them, and they proved themselves when it mattered most."

The Lady Panthers demonstrated consistency, determination, and teamwork throughout the season, climbing from last year's fifth-place finish to a podium spot this year — a testament to the program's growth and resilience.

Two standout runners earned All-CIAA Conference honors:
  • Natalie Young – finished 6th overall as a freshman, setting a personal best of 19:38.
  • Abijah Jepkemboi – placed 9th overall, adding another strong performance to her impressive season.
"Having two athletes finish in the top 10 is a remarkable accomplishment for our program," said Coach Charles. "I'm extremely proud of this team. We've transformed our standing from near the bottom through hard work, belief, and consistency."

Coach Charles also credited the rest of his roster — Toni MiddlebrooksJai-Lyn JohnsonGabrielle Olukoya, and Alexus Dilliard — for their determination and contributions to the team's success.

"A special shoutout to our entire squad," he added. "Each of them gave their all to achieve this success. I couldn't be prouder."
