Virginia Union University's Alana Simmons tied her career high with 16 kills, but Clinton College defeated the Lady Panthers 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 27-25 on Thursday, September 17, at Barco-Stevens Hall.

Simmons recorded 16 kills on 46 attacks, with just two errors, for a .304 hitting percentage. She also added 12 defensive digs and two service aces.

Virginia Union's Jordan Carter posted a career-high 26 defensive digs, while teammate Maria Pena recorded a career-high 22 assists. Carter also contributed 10 kills and three service aces. Pena added 13 kills, four total blocks and six digs.

The Lady Panthers finished with 57 kills and 53 assists as a team. Virginia Union also recorded 77 defensive digs and six total blocks.

"It was a tough loss for us in our first home match of the season," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach Anetra Sims.  "Our girls came out a little flat tonight, and by the time we found our rhythm and raised our level of play, we had created too much of a gap to overcome.  That being said, we're still on the grind, and we know there is work to be done. We will learn from this experience, continue to grow, and work on becoming more consistent as a team. We're looking forward to continuing to build, compete, and grow together."

The loss drops Virginia Union to 3-4 on the season, while Clinton improves to 9-3.

Virginia Union now travels to Elizabeth City, N.C., to face Elizabeth City State University on Monday, September 21.
