Butler Named CIAA Coach of the Year; Dark, Gardner Second-Team All-CIAA

Jay Butler, head men's basketball coach at Virginia Union University, has been named the 2026 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Basketball Coach of the Year, the conference announced.

Butler earns the honor for the third time in his career after guiding the Panthers to a 24-4 overall record during the 2025-26 regular season. He previously received CIAA Coach of the Year recognition in 2017 and 2023.

Under Butler's leadership, Virginia Union once again established itself as one of the premier programs in the conference. The Panthers demonstrated consistency, discipline, and balanced play on both ends of the floor throughout the season, translating preparation and execution into 24 regular-season victories.

In addition to Butler's recognition, VUU's Malachi Dark and Bobby Gardner were named Second-Team All-CIAA, highlighting the depth and development within the Panthers' roster.

"First I just want to thank my coaching staff for all their hard work and dedication," said Butler. "Anytime you win 24 games in the regular season you have to have a special group of young men, and this team has been consistent all year. I was very happy for Bobby and Malachi for making second team All-CIAA. I watch them put the work in and now they are seeing that hard work pays off."

Butler's third Coach of the Year award further solidifies his impact on the Virginia Union men's basketball program. His emphasis on accountability, player development, and competitive excellence continues to position the Panthers as a championship contender within the CIAA.
