Panthers Gain Road Win at Bowie State

BOWIE, Md. – Virginia Union University secured a hard-fought 72-69 CIAA road victory over Bowie State University on Saturday afternoon, overcoming challenges at the free-throw line and on the boards with a decisive defensive effort in the second half.

The Panthers shot 18-of-35 from the free-throw line and were outrebounded 34-29, but locked in defensively after halftime to close out the three-point win and strengthen their position in conference play.

Virginia Union placed five players in double figures, showcasing balanced scoring throughout the lineup.

Leading Scorers – Virginia Union "Anytime you can struggle from the free throw line 18-35, get beat on the boards 34-29, and still get a win I will take it," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler. "It was also good to see the VUU fans travel to watch us play on the road on Valentine's Day. It's tough to win games on the road but I thought the guys really locked in defensively in the second half to get another solid road win."

Virginia Union's defensive intensity down the stretch limited Bowie State's scoring opportunities in the final minutes, allowing the Panthers to protect their narrow lead and secure another key road win.
