RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 29, 2026) — The
Virginia Union University men's basketball team continued its strong 2025-26 season with a
CIAA victory over Elizabeth City State University on Thursday night at Barco-Stevens Hall. The Panthers, buoyed by defensive intensity and timely baskets, came away with a 69-63 win behind
Bobby Gardner's 23 points.
From the opening possession, Virginia Union set the tone defensively, holding E-City State to tough shots and controlling the glass. The balanced offensive attack produced scoring throughout the lineup, while key stops on defense helped VUU maintain and expand its lead throughout the contest.
"I just kept telling the guys to be locked in, play defense, and let's get stops on possession at a time," said
VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler. "I thought we were sluggish the entire game, but perhaps that was because we've been off for a couple of days because of the weather."
Virginia Union improves its overall and conference record with the win, continuing its push toward postseason positioning in CIAA play. The balanced scoring and defensive execution shown in this game reflect the Panthers' ongoing emphasis on teamwork and intensity on both ends of the floor.
