February 8, 2025 – The Virginia Union University (VUU) women's basketball team extended its impressive season with a 62-51 victory over Bluefield State University on Saturday, February 8, at Ned Shott Arena in Bluefield, West Virginia. The Panthers' win boosted their overall record to 16-4 and their standing in the CIAA to 9-1, keeping them firmly in the hunt for a top spot in the conference.
Leading the charge for VUU was
Taniyah Greene, who scored a game-high 19 points, delivering a standout offensive performance.
Nevaeh Reaves and
Bruni Martinez contributed with 11 points each, rounding out a solid offensive effort. On the defensive end,
Tatiana Jones led the team with 10 rebounds, helping VUU control the glass and stifle Bluefield State's offensive rhythm.
Head coach
Tierra Terry acknowledged the challenge the game presented, particularly Bluefield State's relentless full-court press, which made for a tough matchup. "Kudos to Bluefield State for how hard they played and staying true to their identity of pressing the entire game," Terry said. "They made it a very tough game for us. We turned the ball over too much today but our defense helped us win this game. Our rookie,
Maia Charles, had a stellar defensive performance with 5 blocks. On the offensive side,
Taniyah Greene,
Nevaeh Reaves, and
Bruni Martinez had solid performances that helped us stretch the lead out. It is always hard to win at Ned Shott Arena, and we are happy we found a way to get the job done."
Looking ahead, the Panthers are gearing up for their next challenge as they prepare to face Fayetteville State University on Monday, February 10, at 5:30 p.m. in Barco-Stevens Hall, Richmond, Va. Coach Terry and the team are focused on maintaining their momentum as they continue to aim for success in the CIAA.
