OXFORD, PA – The Virginia Union University men's basketball team secured a decisive 58-43 victory over the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, February 15, showcasing an impressive all-around performance on both sides of the court.
Strong Offensive and Defensive Performance
Leading the charge for the Panthers was
DJ Mitchell, who posted a team-high 15 points. Close behind were
Travis Vaughn with 12 points and
Malachi Dark contributing 11 points, as the team's offensive balance proved key in extending their lead. However, it was the defense that truly set the tone for Virginia Union throughout the game.
Jonathan King stood out as the leading rebounder, grabbing 9 boards to help control the glass. The Panthers' defensive effort was a highlight, as they held Lincoln University to under 50 points—a feat that Head Coach
Jay Butler praised in his post-game remarks.
Coach Jay Butler's Assessment
"I thought the guys did a great job bouncing back from a tough home loss against Bowie State," said Coach Butler. "I was very impressed with our defense the entire game. We did a great job locating Lincoln shooters and kept them from getting to the basket.
DJ Mitchell and TJ Vaughn got us going early knocking down a couple of three-point shots to help extend the lead. Anytime you can hold a Lincoln team to under 50 points that's a total team effort on the defensive end."
Looking Ahead: Shaw University on February 17
The Panthers are gearing up for their next challenge on Monday, February 17, when they host Shaw University at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. With the momentum from their recent win, Virginia Union is focused on continuing their strong defensive play and maintaining offensive consistency as they head into their next matchup.
