RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Union University women's basketball team held on for a 52–49 victory over UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon inside Barco-Stevens Hall.

Virginia Union led 15–11 after the first quarter and carried a 26–24 lead into halftime. UNC Pembroke trimmed the margin to two at the end of the third quarter, but the Panthers responded with key defensive stops and timely baskets down the stretch to secure the win.

De'Aisjah Somerville contributed key defensive plays and late rebounds, while Ashley Gonzalez and Karimah Nix provided valuable minutes off the bench. Bre'Asia Washington paced UNC Pembroke with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Coach's Quote
"Pembroke played a very good game today," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach Alico Dunk. "They came out very aggressively and attacked the basket early. They got to the free-throw line, and that kept them in the game. You have to give them credit — they went right at the heart of our defense and hurt us early."
