VUU Tops Virginia State on Volleyball Senior Night

RICHMOND, VA — In front of a packed Senior Night crowd of 1,052 fans at Barco-Stevens Hall, the Virginia Union University women's volleyball team closed out its home schedule in thrilling fashion with a five-set victory over rival Virginia State University, 3–2 (18–25, 25–18, 22–25, 25–20, 15–6), on Thursday evening.

The win improved the Lady Panthers to 15–11 overall and 9–6 in CIAA play, while the Trojans fell to 13–10 and 12–3 in conference competition.

Virginia Union's upperclassmen led the way in their final home appearance. Senior setter Ashlee Franklin tallied 42 assists and 20 digs, orchestrating a balanced offensive attack that saw five Lady Panthers record eight or more kills. Senior outside hitter Aireanna Johnson finished with eight kills, 15 digs, and three total blocks, while senior libero Jasmine Powell anchored the defense with a team-high 22 digs and steady serve-receive play.

Junior Alana Simmons powered the offense with 16 killssix service aces, and 19 digs, while junior Madison Hill added 13 kills and six blocks. Freshman Alexandra Perot contributed 10 kills and four blocks in a breakout performance.

After dropping the first and third sets, the Lady Panthers roared back with dominant fourth and fifth sets—closing the match on a 9–2 run in the deciding frame to seal the victory.
"What an incredible performance from our girls tonight," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach Anetra Sims.  "They came out focused, fought hard, and earned a huge conference victory. I couldn't be more proud of this team — their dedication, effort, and teamwork truly showed on the court."
Prior to the match, VUU honored its three seniors — Ashlee Franklin, Aireanna Johnson, and Jasmine Powell — for their dedication and contributions to the program. Together, they have been instrumental in elevating the Lady Panthers into perennial CIAA contenders through their leadership, work ethic, and commitment on and off the court.
