Volleyball Season Ends in CIAA Tournament

Virginia Union University dropped its opening match of the CIAA Volleyball Tournament on Friday afternoon, falling 3–0 to Shaw University at A.C. Jordan Arena in Bowie, Md. The Panthers were unable to overcome several early Shaw runs, falling by set scores of 25–13, 25–9, and 25–9.

VUU (16-12, 10-6 CIAA) struggled to establish offensive rhythm against a strong Shaw defensive front. The Panthers totaled 14 kills on the day, led by Aireanna Johnson's team-high four killsMaria Peña added four kills of her own, while Madison HillAlana Simmons, and Alexandra Perot combined for the remaining Panther points at the net.

Setter Ashlee Franklin finished with 11 assists and four digs, while Aireanna Johnson contributed defensively with four digs and three total blocks. Alana Simmons led VUU with six digs, and Perot recorded three block assists.

Shaw (13-10, 10-6 CIAA) delivered an efficient offensive performance, finishing with 36 kills and a .316 hitting percentage. The Bears also served 12 aces, including a seven-ace third set that broke the match open.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Anetra Sims emphasized the resilience and potential of her team.

"It was a tough loss, but also a powerful reminder of the level we're working to reach," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach Anetra Sims. "Thank you to everyone who continues to support us — our best volleyball is still ahead."

The match concludes Virginia Union's 2025 volleyball season. The Panthers close the year with 16 wins, marking the most wins in 20 years while ending up as CIAA Northern Division Champions.  

Both Madison Hill and Ashlee Franklin were named to Second Team All-CIAA, showing the continued progress under Coach Sims as the program builds toward future tournament success.
