Virginia Union University improved to
2–1 on the season with a strong
69–50 road win over Shepherd University on Saturday afternoon at the Butcher Athletic Center. The Panthers controlled the game from start to finish, using a relentless defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack to secure their second straight victory.
VUU established its identity early, holding the Rams to just
12 first-quarter points and disrupting Shepherd's rhythm all afternoon. The Panthers forced
21 turnovers, converted those into
26 points, and limited the Rams to
32.7% shooting from the floor. Union's dominance on the boards — a
47–34 advantage, including
16 offensive rebounds — provided consistent second-chance scoring opportunities.
Offensively, the Panthers were led by a standout effort from
Bruni Martinez, who delivered a powerful
25-point, 13-rebound double-double while shooting 10-of-20 from the field.
De'aisjah Somerville added
11 points and 8 rebounds, and
Maya Robinson contributed
13 points along with a game-high
8 assists. In total,
nine different Panthers scored, reflecting the balanced and efficient offensive execution that fueled the win.
Virginia Union used a 22-point third quarter to maintain control before slamming the door with a dominant
20–4 fourth quarter run, holding Shepherd without a field goal for much of the final frame.
Head Coach
Alico Dunk praised his team's complete performance:
"We played well defensively and rebounded the ball. That was an emphasis going into the game. Offensively we shared the basketball and had balanced scoring. It was a great team win."
Shepherd was paced by
Kara Wehner, who finished with
18 points, but the Rams struggled to overcome VUU's pressure and interior strength.
