Lady Panthers Lay Claim to First Place in CIAA North

On Wednesday, January 29, the Virginia Union University Lady Panthers earned a crucial 74-61 victory over Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C., propelling them to the top spot in the CIAA Northern Division standings.

With the win, VUU improved to 13-4 overall and 7-1 in CIAA play, solidifying their place as a top contender in the conference.

Key Performances:
  • Taniyah Greene led the charge with a stellar 21 points and 7 rebounds.
  • Tatiana Jones was a force on both ends of the floor, registering a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Rori Cox added 14 points and went an impressive 10-13 from the free-throw line.
Head Coach Tierra Terry praised her team's efforts following the win. "The environment and crowd energy is always at a high level in the Vaughn Center. It is a tough place to compete," she said. "We cannot speak enough about Tatiana Jones' impact in our win today. She scored 17 points and snatched 11 rebounds. Taniyah Greene came in with a solid stat line of 21 points and 7 rebounds, and Rori Cox also added 14 points and went 10-13 from the free-throw line. Defensively we held a tough ECSU team to 61 points and forced 24 turnovers. We are really proud of our young ladies for playing so hard and showing fight on the road."

With the win, the Lady Panthers are gearing up for their next match-up, where they'll face Lincoln University of Pennsylvania at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

Looking Ahead: 

VUU is poised to continue its dominant run in the CIAA, but as Coach Terry notes, there's no time to rest on their laurels. The team remains focused and determined to build on their success.
