Virginia Union Triumphs Over College of Staten Island in Hard-Fought Battle

Virginia Union University extended its winning streak to three games with a 74-68 victory over the College of Staten Island on Thursday, January 2, in Staten Island, New York.

Balanced Scoring Leads the Way

The Panthers showcased a well-rounded offensive attack, with five players scoring in double figures. DJ Mitchell led the charge with a stellar 16-point performance. Kennard Wyche added 13 points, while Malachi Dark contributed 12. Both Travis Vaughn and Jamari Garnett chipped in with 10 points each, highlighting the depth of the team's roster.

"This was a real good team win after being off for almost two weeks for the Christmas break," said VUU head coach Jay Butler. "Anytime you can get five guys to score in double figures, it's always a good team effort."

Key Plays Secure the Win

Virginia Union built a strong foundation in the first half, entering halftime with a 39-29 lead. However, the game proved to be a test of resilience, as the score was tied three times and the lead changed hands nine times. The Panthers' largest lead of the night was 13 points, but the College of Staten Island fought back to keep the game competitive.

"I thought KJ Wyche, TJ Vaughn, and Jamari Garnett made some key plays in the second half to help us secure the win," Butler noted.

Mitchell and Dark provided a dynamic inside-out scoring punch that will be crucial as the team prepares for Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play.

Dominating the Boards

Keysean Faulkner-Smith emerged as the Panthers' top rebounder, grabbing six boards to help VUU maintain their edge in second-chance opportunities.

Looking Ahead

The win sets a positive tone for the Panthers as they head into their next matchup against St. Thomas Aquinas on January 4 in Sparkill, New York. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. With momentum on their side, VUU looks poised to continue their strong run as they eye success in the CIAA.

Stay tuned for more updates as Virginia Union aims to build on this impressive start to the new year.
