Virginia Union University's Maia Charles continued to make a bid for being the CIAA Rookie of the Year by scoring a team-high 18 points as VUU downed Adelphi University 57-52 on Saturday, December 7, in Garden City, N.Y.

Charles went 6-for-9 from the field and hit 6 of 7 free throws to lead the Lady Panthers in scoring.

VUU's Taniyah Greene scored 16 points while teammate Rori Cox pulled down 10 rebounds as the Lady Panthers raised their record to 6-3.

"We were so proud of the gritty, tough win on the road versus a very fundamentally sound Adelphi team," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach Tierra Terry.  "Our freshman, Maia Charles, had a huge showing in front of her home crowd with 18 points and clutch free throws to seal the game. Taniyah Greene had a solid 16 points, 9 rebounds , Rori Cox snatched 10 rebounds, Kennedee Matthews had 3 assists, and Tatiana Jones had 6 rebounds. We did not have our best offensive showing but our defensive effort put us over the top. This was a great team win, we will celebrate, recoup, and get ready for WSSU Thursday."

Virginia Union will now travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face Winston-Salem State University at 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, December 12.
