Virginia Union University's Micah Kipruto won the CIAA Championship in the men's 5000 meters at the 2023 CIAA Track & Field Championships, held on May 6-7 in Durham, N.C.

Kipruto won the event with a time of 15:58.48, beating Jalen Brownlee of Virginia State University by more than half a minute.

The VUU Men's 4 x 100 relay team of Thariq Walters, Jalen Hinton, Christopher Laws and Christopher Dameron placed fourth overall.

On the women's side, Virginia Union's Kiara Shepherd placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 10.28 meters.

VUU's Jade Lane broke her own school record in the javelin with a throw 33.73 meters as she placed second overall.

"We had a lot of great performances on day two at the CIAA Championships," said VUU Head Track and Field Coach Charles Franck.  "Micah Kipruto won the 5000 meters. Dequan Boone finished 4th in the discus. Christopher Laws came out of high school competition running 53 seconds in the 400m, but he was able to run a 49.61 in the 400 meters final. Jalen Hinton came out of regular season running 22.71 in the 200 meters, but now he's running 21.68.  That time was his personal best, and it shows everything we are doing with our athletes is working very well.  We just have to bring in more student-athletes in this upcoming school year to have more success.
