Virginia Union University's Micah Kipruto won the 5,000 meters at the 2023 CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, held in Winston-Salem, N.C., on February 12 and 13.

Kipruto won the event with a time of 16:31.02.

VUU's Jalen Hinton placed second in the Men's 60-meter Dash with a time of 6.92.

On the women's side, Virginia Union's Kayla Lee made it to the finals of the women's 60-meter dash.  She finished the finals with a time of 7.95.

"It was a wonderful joy to see Jalen Hinton and Micah Kipruto perform great," said VUU Head Track & Field Coach Charles Franck.  "Jalen came in 2nd place in the 60m dash, he also came back to place 4th in 200m dash. Micah Kipruto placed 2nd in the 1 mile run, he also came back to win the 5000. It was wonderful to see both of them place in the top 3 for their events. We also had good performances from Dequan Boone coming in 6th place in men's shot put, Kayla Lee placed 8th in the 60m dash, the men's 1600-meter relay placed 6th overall.  

"Yes, we have a lot of work to do as a team but as long as we are making progress each meet you can't ask for much more.  We are getting ready for our first outdoor meet on March 17th, the 2023 Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by University of Richmond in Richmond, Va."
