Virginia Union University's
Dominique Mulero became the third pitcher in VUU softball history to throw a no-hitter when the Lady Panthers defeated Livingstone College 9-0 in the first game of a double-header on Tuesday, April 12, in Salisbury, N.C.
Mulero joined Quincy Lewis, who tossed a no-hitter in 2012, and Shontel Linnette, who threw a no-hitter in 2018.
Mulero struck out a season-high 11 batters over six innings of work.
"We played very efficiently and played good defense with timely hitting," said VUU Head Softball Coach Fred Burroughs.
Mulero and
Arianna Burford each drove in two runs to lead the Panthers' offense.
In the second game, VUU scored five runs in the first inning on doubles by Mulero and
Diamond Jones as Virginia Union went on to sweep the double-header with a 13-2 win over the Blue Bears.
VUU's
Ericka Tiscareno pitched five innings and struck out four to notch the win. Â
Diamond Jones would drive in four runs in the second game.
The wins give VUU a 13-9 record. The Panthers will now travel to Petersburg, Va., to face Virginia State University in a non-conference matchup.
VUU will face Virginia State at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21.
