Softball Sweeps Lincoln

Virginia Union University's softball team moved into sole possession of second place in the Northern Division of the CIAA by sweeping Lincoln University of Pennsylvania 9-1 and 19-1 on Sunday, April 10, at Panther Park in Richmond, Va.

"This was our best hitting game of the season," said VUU Head Softball Coach Fred Burroughs.  "We had our power game on display today."

In the first game, VUU's Dominique Mulero struck out eight over six innings while Diamond Jones drove in three runs.

Mulero retired the first eight batters of the game and at one point struck out five straight Lincoln batters.

"This was definitely one of my better games of the season," Mulero said.  "It's not the best I can do because I know I can do better.  But I was definitely feeling it today."

In the second game, VUU's power lineup was apparent from the first inning.  Virginia Union's Arianna Burford, Mulero and Mya Tino all slammed home runs.

Burford also had a double and single to go with her home run.  Burford drove in six runs in the second game.

"This was definitely the best weekend of my college career so far (Burford also homered against Bowie State University on Saturday)," Burford said.  "I've been struggling a lot, but I've become more confident at the plate, and I know I can hit the ball, so I just executed."

VUU is now in second place of the Northern Division with an 8-6 CIAA record.  Virginia State University leads the Northern Division with an 11-3 CIAA record.

Virginia Union will now travel to Salisbury, N.C., to face Livingstone College in a non-conference matchup at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12.
