Big Hits Power VUU to a Split with Mercy

Virginia Union University's Nevaeh Johnson and Dominique Mulero homered as VUU split its softball double-header with Mercy College on Sunday, March 6, at Panther Park in Richmond, Va.

Johnson's 2-run homer came in the first game despite Mercy College besting the Lady Panthers 4-3 while Mulero's 2-run slam came as VUU defeated the Mavericks 8-6.

VUU's Arianna Burford and Sydnee Brown each drove in two runs in the second game as Mulero picked up the save.

"We played a better quality team than we did in the season opener," VUU Head Softball Coach Fred Burroughs said.  "I don't believe we ever beat this team before, so I'll take the win because Mercy College plays quality teams."

"I'm a high-ball hitter, so if I get anything up in the zone, then that's my pitch to hit." Mulero said of her homer.  "The first pitch was right down the middle about yay-high, so I only I had one choice, to take it deep."

VUU is now 3-1 on the season.

The Lady Panthers now play West Liberty University at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, at Panther Park in Richmond, Va.
