Virginia Union University's
Taniah Johnson and A'Qoyas Cody scored 14 points apiece as VUU downed a tough Edward Waters College squad 62-60 on the first day of the VSU Conference Challenge on Friday, November 18, in Petersburg, Va.
The game was decided when Darryn Ziegler sank two free throws with two seconds left to break a 60-60 tie.
Cody also recorded her first double-double of the season by also grabbing 10 rebounds. Â
VUU's Ny Langley also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Ziegler finished with 10 points.
"We have to do a better job with controlling the lead, but we came together as a team and got this big win against a 2-0 Edward Waters College team," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach
Tierra Terry. "Charm Browne and freshman A'Qoyas Cody gave us some great minutes from the bench. Ny Langley got going late but finished with a double-double as well.
Taniah Johnson and Darryn Zeigler were also big contributors on the offensive end. We have to celebrate the victory and move on quickly as we face a big and strong Benedict College Team tomorrow."
The win raised VUU's record to 2-1 on the season.
The Lady Panthers will now face Benedict College on the second day of the VSU Conference Challenge at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, in Petersburg, Va.
