Shippensburg Spoils Lady Panthers' Opener

It must have felt that Virginia Union University's women's basketball team was playing a game of 8-on-5 during the Lady Panthers' season opening loss to Shippensburg University on Friday, November 12, in Shippensburg, Pa.
 
VUU was called for 33 fouls compared to 14 for Shippensburg during Virginia Union's 80-66 loss to the Raiders.
 
Shippensburg shot 23 free throws compared to eight for the Lady Panthers.
 
Virginia Union's Chris Alston picked up two fouls in the first 45 seconds of the game while fellow starter Ny Langley picked up two fouls in the first three minutes of the game.
 
Even with two starters on the bench, the Lady Panthers only trailed Shippensburg 24-18 at the end of the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, however, Shippensburg hit nine of 15 free throws, with VUU not even attempting any.  The Raiders led 46-39 at halftime.
 
VUU's Taniah Johnson led the Lady Panthers with 19 points coming off the bench while Darryn Zeigler added 15 points.
 
Virginia Union's Ceanna Kinney led all rebounders with 18 boards.
 
Virginia Union will now open the home season when the Lady Panthers take on Chowan University at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, November 19, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
