Dy'Manee Royal scored a team-high 21 points and 16 rebounds as VUU defeated Elizabeth City State University 76-41 on Saturday, February 8, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
It was Royal's fifth double-double of the season.
VUU's
Peyton Evans added 20 points while teammate
Ifunanya Okoye received a double-double of her own with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
"The Lady Panthers played a solid game on both ends of the floor tonight," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach
AnnMarie Gilbert. "It was great to see
Peyton Evans get hot and knock down 6-7 shots from behind the arc to finish with 20 points, three assists, and two steals.
Dy'Manee Royal was tremendous on the glass and around the basket as she had one of her best games, leading us in scoring and rebounds to go with three blocks. Iffy Okoye continues to impress as she exploded for 16 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, four steals, and two blocks.
Shameka McNeill finished the game with great poise, chipping in nine points, six assists, and two steals. As a team, we reached several game goals. We want to shoot at least 25 free throws each game and we shot 28 times from the charity stripe. Free throws are critical to achieve championship level success. We also grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and 46 boards overall. We shared the ball well ending with 19 assists, and collected 13 steals. It was a great team win."
The win raised VUU's record to 18-3 overall and 9-2 in the CIAA. Elizabeth City State fell to 8-16 overall and 4-10 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union now travels to Salisbury, N.C., to face Livingstone College at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 10.
