Win Over Bowie State Sets Up Showdown with VSU

Virginia Union University's Terrell Leach scored 24 points to lead VUU to an 80-70 win over Bowie State University on Wednesday, February 19, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

The win sets up a showdown with Virginia State University in the final game of the regular season for the championship of the Northern Division of the CIAA.

"I thought we came out and set the tempo defensively the first couple minutes that carried throughout the first half," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  "Anytime you can shoot over 50 percent for the game and get five players in double-figures is always good.  We played a small lineup in the second half that allowed us to play fast, and I thought Charles Tart III, Jordan Peebles, Tyriek Railey, and Terrell Leach did a good job sharing the basketball that really showed our athleticism.  I was very impressed with the way Raemaad Wright battled on the boards against the Bowie State big guys. He's been our unsung hero on this current win streak."

Tart scored 17 points while Wright and Railey each scored 13 points apiece.  Wright also led the Panthers with five rebounds.

The win raised VUU's record to 17-10 overall and 10-4 in CIAA play.  Virginia Union also has a 5-2 divisional record compared to Virginia State's 6-1 record in the division.

Bowie State fell to 16-11 overall and 8-6 in the CIAA.

Virginia Union wraps up the regular season when the Panthers face VSU at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
