Virginia Union University's
Jasmine Carter provided a powerful post game as the Lady Panthers defeated Winston-Salem State University 61-49 on Saturday, January 11, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Carter led VUU with 16 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks to lift the Lady Panthers to their 11th straight win.
"I'm excited we were able to pull out another tough road win," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach
AnnMarie Gilbert. "We were paced by
Jasmine Carter in points and rebounds. She is our defensive leader and leads our press attack.
Breonn Hughey is shooting the ball real well and chipped in 12 points, two assists, and two rebounds.
Ifunanya Okoye provided some interior toughness and finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Both
Dy'Manee Royal and
Shameka McNeill added seven points a piece. We had two good quarters and two that were a struggle. Our best players must step up. We need more consistency and discipline and must also put four good quarters together to be the team we are capable of becoming. We are very grateful for the road win pushing us to 12-1 on the season."
Besides being the 12th win in 13 games, the win also kept the Lady Panthers undefeated in the CIAA at 4-0. Winston-Salem State fell to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union now travels to Lincoln University, Pa., to face the Lions of Lincoln University of Pennsylvania at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15.
