Resilient Lady Panthers Post Win Over JCSU

Virginia Union University's Peyton Evans  has emerged as the new leading scorer for the Lady Panthers as she posted 23 points in VUU's 70-59 win over Johnson C. Smith University in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, December 18, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

Evans has averaged 18.5 points in the Lady Panthers' two games this past week.

"I have never been more proud of our team then after watching the way they fought through adversity this past week," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach AnnMarie Gilbert.   "It's been an emotional time for our program but this team is very resilient.  We started off well  against JCSU but soon got plagued with a few too many turnovers before coming on strong and finishing the game with a solid 11-point victory.  I can't say enough about Peyton Evans and how she has stepped up big to lead us in scoring with 23 points, six rebounds, and four steals.  Shameka McNeill chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals.  Ifunanya Okoye's contribution of 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and five steals made a huge impact.  Our defense was stellar in the fourth quarter as we held The Golden Bulls to just five points in the last 10 minutes of the game.  We are extremely excited to close out 2019 with an overall 8-1 record."

Johnson C. Smith didn't score any points in the fourth quarter until 1:30 left in the game as the Golden Bulls fell to 4-6.

Virginia Union will return to action when the Lady Panthers host Shaw University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
