Unfortunately, VUU came up just short of a win, with VSU coming away with a 27-24 win in Petersburg, Va.
VUU's
Tabyus Taylor rushed for 103 yards on 23 carries, including a touchdown.
Virginia Union's
Khalid Morris completed nine of 21 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns.
"It was a tough and hard fought loss by our team on Saturday," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr.
Alvin Parker. "I'm extremely proud of our guys for the resiliency and effort that they showed. This game was the true definition of a rivalry game. We will regroup and prepare for what's to come for Panther Football."
The game ended regulation time with both teams tied 24-24, being the first tie since 1989. Overtime in NCAA football games wasn't introduced until 1995.
In the overtime, Virginia State connected on a 34-yard field goal to take a 27-24 lead in overtime.
VUU had a chance to tie, but a fake field pass by quarterback
E'mond Caldwell fell incomplete on fourth down to give VSU the win.
Virginia Union's
Taj Conway led the Panthers on defense with eight tackles.
The loss dropped VUU to 7-3 on the season.
